As one of the first licensed Western Riding schools in the country, we’ve always been at the forefront of promoting and teaching western riding here at Sovereign. (Licence number: RID44)
We offer riding lessons for all abilities, from the complete beginner to the more experienced rider either on our specially trained horses or your own horse.
*We are only able to offer lessons to people aged 14 years and over and we must have received your completed rider form (Link below) if you are a new client before taking your booking. In order to offer you a good riding experience we would also be grateful if you can disclose any disabilities when making a booking either via email or verbally.*

All our lessons are held in our new quality, purpose built arena. We are a licensed riding establishment with the Cambridgeshire County Council and fully covered by public liability insurance so whatever your level of riding, you can be sure you are in good hands. Due to the fact that SQH is a leading competition yard, and a well known stud. David and Sarah share teaching between them, with David teaching most afternoons and Sarah teaching in the mornings, we also offer weekend lessons.
David Deptford has been teaching all levels of riders for many years and is unfailingly patient and knowledgeable. He is foremost an educator, of both you and your horse, whether you are new to riding and want to learn the basics for a Ranch Holiday, or with a view to eventually having your own horse.
If you are more experienced and hoping to show your horse, or even add new skills, he will tailor your lessons to your own aims and ambitions. David’s pupils over the years have excelled in western competitions, such as Reining, Horsemanship, Western Pleasure, Halter and showmanship as well as English events such as Dressage. They even excel in just enjoying their horses. All of which are important. During 2008 David rejoined the British Reining Team who narrowly missed out on a bronze medal and was the trailblazer for the team at the FEI World Reining Championship. Added to his Reining pedigree, David is one of the leading Ranch Riding competitors in Europe, having taken the Gold Medal with his home bred gelding Heir To A Jay in Junior Ranch Riding at the 2015 European Champions. In addition, he has competed two of our stallions to earn their AQHA Champion Award, joining a handful of horses in the UK who have earned this award. In 2017, David and the Sovereign team went back to the European Championships and both David and Assistant Trainer Olivia Lochhead stood on the medal podium earning Silver and Bronze respectively with Sovereign bred and trained horses. David and Sarah are renown in the UK for breeding and producing exceptional horses in the Halter classes. Horses that also ride! David was one of the first of a very small number of instructors in the country who have passed their UKCC/EQL Level 3 Certificate in Coaching.
Sarah Deptford is an accomplished horsewoman in her own right, having grown up showing ponies, working at a well known show pony yard. Having converted to western riding when she met David, Sarah is ideally placed to help make the transition from “English”. Sarah has produced and shown horses both in the UK and overseas in all events with considerable success. She has produced and trained many young horses to compete successfully in All Around events, such as Trail, Horsemanship, Reining, Ranch Riding and is a focussed and sympathic instructor. Sarah is a qualified UKCC Level 2 coach.
