2013 Tim Kimura Trail Clinic

941872_10151594865664449_1690912888_nLegendary Trail Guru Tim Kimura made his 3rd trip to Horse Creek Farm during May 2013.  For those of you who haven’t heard of Tim, he’s the leading Trail course designer in the world.  Additionally, he’s an absolutely amazing clinician, and we’re so lucky to have him at Horse Creek Farm.

He’s dubbed the “Man of Trail” – although we’ve now nicknamed him the “Minister of Trail” because he is just such a great person to learn from.   It doesn’t matter to Tim whether it is the first time you’ve ever seen a trail course, or whether you are a seasoned competitor, his tips and teaching encompasses all levels.  He’s genuinely very interested in teaching trail techniques to anyone who’s interested.

When talking to Tim, you can tell how passionate he is about the grass roots of trail, he says that we always need to be encouraging people to start working on what he thinks is the best western class,

The feedback we’ve got from this year’s participants has been great, and we’re already planning for him to come back next year.

AQHA UK Spring Show

P1070725We were thrilled to welcome back the AQHA UK Spring Show over the May bank holiday weekend.

With large classes and tough competition, we’d like to congratulate the team and clients who showed.

As usual, SQH bred horses dominated the Halter classes with Dorothy Coleman and Snippnbelles Star, along with Joyce Markham and Heir To A Cady taking home purple ribbons.  Nigel Crowe showing A Snip Of A Jay was the Champion Gelding under all judges with David Deptford showing his own Heir To A Jay taking home reserve Grand Champion in the Open division.

In the performance classes, Sarah Deptford riding Dorothy Coleman’s Snippnbelles Star showed really well.  David had great results in both the Reining with Tuff N Jay owned by Linda Joynes and with Classie Jay in Ranch Horse Pleasure.

Tracy Haynes riding Jays Centrefold had a great go in Horsemanship, Sandra Mitchell riding Im Sassy Story also had a great show.  Kate West, with Easy Jay Olena won her first reining class, Joyce Markham and Paul Fisher had great results also.

Interestingly, looking through the horses at the show, Jays Smokin Story was the stallion represented more than any other stallion, with 11 offspring showing at the event.  He is really a most fabulous stallion, who passes on to his offspring an easy going and forgiving nature, we’re so proud of him and his babies.

Do You Want A Horse That Can Do Everything?

Here at Sovereign, we’ve been breeding and producing American Quarter Horses for 30 years now.   The horses we breed here at the farm, have great pedigrees, fabulous conformation, and fabulous temperaments.

Part of the reason for the success of Sovereign is both the mares and sires of our foals.  The mares are very important, and we are very strict about the mares that make out broodmare band.

The sires are just as important, and one of the things we love about all of the stallions who stand at Sovereign is the fact that you can take them anywhere and many people don’t even realise they are stallions!  We also treat them like horses, and they have a varied life, it’s not just all competitions.

We are lucky enough to have some very good friends who have cattle and as often as we can (which isn’t often enough, as we all really enjoy ourselves) we take “the boys” over to help move cattle around near Thetford Forest.

During the Christmas break, we took Blaze and Jay, just take a look at how chilled the boys were.  We all had a great time, we’re really proud to have these horses, and we’re really proud of their babies too.

Results of March 10th SQH Show

pumbaGreat time at the show on Sunday 10th March, chilly start to the day, but although it seemed all areas around us were covered in snow, the “tropical” Fens remained snow free, albeit a bit chilly!

Great turnout for the classes, with everyone benefiting from feedback from Judge David Deptford.

The Adult and Non QH High Point went to Abbey Brotherton on the Fjord Pumba

The Youth Highpoint went right down to the wire, with our show secretary having to wait for the results of the last class to declare the winner Sophie Mead with Fast Draw Flashy, with Claire Evans and Remedy only one point behind.

Our thanks to Mountain Horse Clothing for their generous sponsorship of both the February and March Shows.

We’re now looking forward to the joint Fenland AQHA Novice and SQH All Breeds Show on 13th April, don’t forget we’ve got the discounted post show clinic with Judge Juergen Von Bistram on Sunday 14th.

Oh, and… have we mentioned the sashes and trophies for first place in all classes…?

GO ON, you want to be part of it… we have chocolates too!!

Ssssh! They’re talking about us: Joyce Markham

davinaLike many people of my age (sorry, you’ll have to guess ‘cos I’m not telling), I was bought up on a diet of TV westerns; Roy Rogers is the earliest memory and the Virginian remains a firm favourite. So its not surprising that even though I was a keen English rider and had owned my own horses I still felt that I was missing something. After a riding break of about 15 years I saw David and Sarah Deptford giving a western demonstration at the Game Fair, Blenheim. I  immediately knew that I had found the missing factor and I had to start riding again and I had to ride western.
Everyone starts at Sovereign on one of the wonderful lesson horses. These animals are very bright and generous (forget the typical English school horse) and under David or Sarah’s careful guidance, these horses provide a fantastic education. I was so enthused by the American Quarter Horse that I had to buy one and eventually became the very proud owner of Heir to a Cady (Davina), a beautiful and smart grey mare bred by David and sired by AQHA Champion Snippers Heirogance.
It was then that I fully began to appreciate the care that David and Sarah take in breeding good quality horses and in coaching their new owners to develop great partnerships with their mounts. David has been so patient and understanding in working with me as I have learned to bring the best out in my horse (or possibly even that Davina has learnt to bring out the best in me).
All the staff at Sovereign are friendly and helpful and happy to answer questions and guide the novice western rider. Other riders and owners are also a very approachable group and I very much feel that I am not just a client but a valued part of the Sovereign team

Here’s the beautifully written article available to read in pdf format..

Snippers Heirogance

Ssssh! They’re Talking About Us – Liz Smith

lizsI came to SQH as a potential client in July 2007 with a desire to buy a Quarter Horse. Very early on it was very apparent to me that David would have my best interests in mind and he would only sell a horse he believed would suit. As someone who had never owned a horse before this was a massive confidence booster.

In February 2008 David took me down to the yard to look at a bunch of very hairy 3yo and one little Orange person in particular was determined to heap my full attention… So that was that and I became the very proud owner of Reminic N Snip a.k.a Toby a son of the wonderful Snippers Heirogance out of a Reminic mare.

Toby and I have had some amazing success in the showed especially at SQH shows. I now struggle to understand how English shows can be such a stress-athon when Sovereign without fail manage to make every show the best place to be. Chocolate is awarded just for turning up!!

Of course having acquired one wonderful equine friend I decided early on I wanted another!! So I now have the privilege of being Mum to a 2011 half brother to Toby Check N Tuff, better known as Lenny.

One of the bonuses from my friendship with Team SQH that I had not bargained for use the camaraderie and friendship of other people who have found their horse owning dreams fulfilled by their Sovereign babies. The horses are just wonderful but the entire SQH package of real deep rooted friendship with David, Sarah and all my fellow Sovereignites is something utterly priceless. Long may it flourish!!
